Weekly recap - Black Thursday, the FA, Roosevelt, and Erasmus

Four Cursor Craft sets for the week of October 29: Black Thursday, The First Kick, Theodore Roosevelt, and Erasmus's Folly.

A week has flown by. Wall Street's crash week, the Football Association's founding night, Theodore Roosevelt's birthday, and Erasmus's calendar day all lined up. Four standalone sets.

The headlines

  • October 24, 1929 was Black Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, the first panic day of the crash that led into the Great Depression.
  • October 26, 1863 is when the Football Association was formed at the Freemasons' Tavern in London to write a shared code of rules.
  • October 27, 1858 is when Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was born in New York City.
  • October 28 is the traditional birthday of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. The year is still disputed (often given as 1466 or 1469).

New sets this week

Black Thursday

October 24, 1929 opened the Wall Street crash. Nearly 13 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange. Tickers fell behind, rumors ran ahead of the tape, and a bankers' pool briefly tried to prop prices before the deeper drops of Black Monday and Black Tuesday finished the week.

Black Thursday puts that day on the pointer. The default arrow mixes a plunging market line, curling ticker tape, and a sharp skyline cut. The pointing hand is a banker's hand from the back, still tangled in the same collapsing tape.

The First Kick

October 26, 1863 is when club reps met at the Freemasons' Tavern on Great Queen Street and founded the Football Association. Ebenezer Cobb Morley pushed for one rulebook the way cricket already had one. That night is the start line for association football as a shared game.

The First Kick is a Victorian football set for that founding. Stitched brown leather, brass edging, and a red ribbon turn the default arrow and the back-of-hand pointer into a small nod to the game's first shared rulebook.

Theodore Roosevelt

October 27, 1858 is Theodore Roosevelt's birthday. He was born at 28 East 20th Street in New York City, later led the Rough Riders, and became the 26th U.S. president. His birthday later became the first Navy Day.

Theodore Roosevelt is a Rough Rider set. Pince-nez, mustache, and khaki uniform carry through the pointer and hand states.

Erasmus's Folly

October 28 is the day Erasmus of Rotterdam is usually celebrated. He wrote In Praise of Folly (Moriae Encomium), a satire that still reads sharp after five centuries. Scholars still argue over 1466 versus 1469 for the birth year; the calendar day is steadier than the year.

Erasmus's Folly plays that satire straight. A fool's cap folds into the default pointer. A bell-trimmed scholar's glove takes over for links. Renaissance wit, made clickable.
