Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, or simply al-Khwarizmi was a 9th-century Persian mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who worked in Baghdad’s House of Wisdom. He is especially important because: His book on solving equations helped establish algebra as a distinct field. The word “algorithm” comes from the Latinized form of his name. His works helped spread the Hindu–Arabic numeral system, including the use of zero, into Europe.
