Weekly recap - Grunewald, a live date, and year progress

A quieter catalog week after Cursor Craft v2: one event set for Matthias Grunewald, plus two special dynamic cursors.

A week has flown by. Most of it went into shipping Cursor Craft v2, so the catalog stayed light: one calendar event, and two special dynamic cursors that the new app can actually run.

The headlines

  • August 31 is the date commonly given for the death of Matthias Grunewald in 1528, painter of the Isenheim Altarpiece.

Isenheim Altarpiece

August 31, 1528 is the date most reference works give for the death of Matthias Grunewald. Grove Art hedges it as August 30 or 31, but Wikipedia and later catalogs settle on the 31st. His largest surviving work is the Isenheim Altarpiece, painted around 1512 to 1516 for the Monastery of St. Anthony at Isenheim, a hospital that treated plague and ergotism. The panels now hang in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar.

The Annunciation face is the quieter side of that machine: Mary seated with an open book, Gabriel's hand raised. Isenheim Altarpiece pulls those two figures onto the desktop. Mary is the default cursor. Gabriel's raised hand is the pointer, with the painting's color still readable at cursor size.

Date Green White

V2 opened the door to cursors that change over time. Date Green White is one of the first: the current day of the month plus a three-letter month name, in green and white. It updates every day, so the pointer is the date. No calendar app. No menu bar widget. Just the day under your click.

Year Progress

Year Progress is the other special. It is a dynamic set that changes daily to show how far through the year you are. A small meter on the pointer instead of another widget to ignore. Useful if you like a quiet nudge that the year is moving, whether you asked for one or not.
